Position: Assistant Director of Studies - Galway

Terms: Full-time, permanent

Job purpose

The Assistant Director of Studies will be responsible for supporting Academic Manager in the day-to-day academic administration of the school, contributing to recruitment and management of teaching staff and providing administrative and academic support in relation to teacher and student pathways on academic programme.

Reporting line

This position will report directly to the Academic Manager.

Key accountabilities and duties

Co-Ordination of Teaching Team

  • Co-ordinate scheduling of all classes

  • Submit accurate information for payroll on a weekly basis

  • Act as mentor to new teachers and carry out onboarding

  • Liaise with other departments and senior management on academic matters

  • Provide support and oversight of digital resource usage

  • Support teachers with delivery of courses and implementation of Educational Ethos

  • Engage with teaching staff to promote the sharing of ideas and resources

  • Be flexible, proactive and communicative in approach to teaching, training and working

  • Teach classes as and when required

  • Engage in a culture of collaboration by sharing ideas, resources and facilitating observations

  • Take responsibility for Academic Office out-of-office contact on rotation

Co-Ordination of Course Content

  • Support syllabus updates for all programmes

  • Co-ordinate development of course materials

  • Contribute to maintaining course content at required standards

  • Co-ordinate sharing and development of supplementary materials

  • Act as Academic Office point of contact on specialised courses

  • Liaise with other centres on aligned teamwork and consistent academic delivery

  • Identify opportunities for course or programme development

Administration of Academic Procedures

  • Conduct teacher observations and contribute to CPD training

  • Support with collection and dissemination of feedback from learners

  • Oversee delivery of cultural programme

  • Support Academic Manager on Recruitment

  • Deal with academic enquiries and issues in line with Atlantic policies and procedures

  • Organise and oversee external exams as required, in liaison with Exams Manager

  • Monitor and manage student progress and provide feedback

  • Oversee placement of students and level change

  • Lead on team meetings where required

  • Act as representative/point of contact of Academic Dept where required

  • Carry out all day-to day academic office administration

Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

Essential
  • Degree qualified or equivalent at NFQ level 7

  • Minimum 5 years’ English Language Teaching experience at all levels

  • Expertise in EFL pedagogical standards and developments

  • Strong IT competences in educational context

  • Excellent communication and administrative skills

  • Ability to manage time effectively in fast-paced work environment

Desirable
  • DELTA (or equivalent) qualified or currently enrolled on DELTA course

  • Track record in project and/or team management

  • Experience of teacher observations and feedback

  • Experience of curriculum and syllabus writing and development

  • Experience of academic administration

  • Experience of ELT in various contexts

  • Familiarity with regulatory and accreditation requirements of an Irish language school

  • Previous experience in a similar role

Required Training

A personalised onboarding schedule will be developed for the successful candidate, with the first month of employment prioritising on-the-job training.
